in the arms of earth
BY JENNIFER PRATT WALTER
the arms of earth gather us in like we
are new lambs, holding us so lightly
that we may forage for peace in each other’s lives
pre-forgiven of faults and fears
here
a compressed mouth is gentled like
the melting of butter into milk,
sprinkled with a sugaring
of kind words from lips
made to ease
don’t let the wild frightened wolves
lather up your heart in its anxious vigil
someday this chaos will pass
or perhaps we will be the passed ones
yielding back precious earth
to herself, blessing her with our bodies
that she may candle all life to come
singing so quiet, like butter melting
into the sugar and milk of compassion
