Revived

She knew she didn’t belong here, the house she would leave behind in the divorce. It looked different on the inside. She kept going, herding her dream children out the back door to play, waiting to see what would happen. She sleep-walked them into the yard and there was the punchline: someone in the pool, too still for life. The body looked exactly like her a few years ago, royal blue maternity bathing suit, hair in a messy bun. Extra pale. She calmly told the children to stay on the far side by the fence as they waited for the flashing lights to come. Then she lucidly went through the motions—“Just dropping them off, I don’t live here anymore”—until the thrill in her heart woke her up.
