Wildflowers
BY RACHEL TESLER
Sometimes I’m in awe
of how strong I was when you found me,
Wiry and untamed like a field of wildflowers
Boldly growing,
Untouched and pristine.
You called me charming and lovely, but
It was you who charmed me
out of my time, energy, and love.
Deeper in the winter with you,
I lost my glow and lived in your afterglow.
You plucked every last flower you wanted for yourself,
greedy and thoughtless
leaving none for anyone else.
The fields rot empty but for snow.
But deep below the surface
buds of healing stirred in hibernation.
Never underestimate
the power of the strongest human heart.
The grounds thaw now.
Where the land lay bare and muddied,
grasses grow.
Life always lived
simmering underneath the surface,
protective of their most precious time, energy, and love.
Every day without you, I grow stronger.
Proud and free like a field of wildflowers.
